About Small Corporation

Molly and Van Wood founded SmallCorp in 1972 in an old mill in Newmarket, New Hampshire. They started out fabricating acrylic boxes and display covers for frame shops, artists and galleries in the Northeast. In 1975 the line grew to include welded aluminum frames, hardwood frames and pedestals , and in 1976 Molly and Van built a small manufacturing building on their property in Berwick, Maine, and began to focus on design and manufacturing solutions to meet the needs of conservators, museums and artists.

In 1987, the company built a new 36,000 square foot energy-efficient building in Greenfield, Massachusetts. In 1990, SmallCorp introduced custom-made aluminum honeycomb support panels and microclimate display cases. Hoyt Wood joined the family firm in 1991 as Plant Manager. Molly and Van began semi-retirement in 2012 and Hoyt became part owner and Managing Director, overseeing day-to-day operations.

In 2008, SmallCorp installed a 100Kw photovoltaic system on its roof to supply its electrical power. This was the culmination of a 20-year process to reduce our energy and resource demands. Our commitment to conservation means the conservation of all our resources-natural and cultural. We continue to look for better ways to use resources wisely and preserve our shared cultural heritage and welcome your ideas and insights. In the spring of 2015 we added an additional 100Kw of solar panels to our roof, making SmallCorp a net energy generator and ensuring that our entire manufacturing process is based on green power.

NEPPFA Sponsorship Renewal

Congratulations to TWO new MCPFs!

A special CONGRATULATIONS to John Harry Gaston of Gaston Art and Frame, and Amanda Kidd Schall of Framed in Tatnuck.  Both have passed testing to earn the Master Certified Picture Framer (MCPF) designation.  This is the highest level of professional recognition in the framing industry and is earned through demonstration of technical skill and knowledge.

Achieving the MCPF designation requires a candidate to meet rigorous qualifications, including successful completion of a hands-on custom framing examination administered by PPFA and demonstrating a thorough knowledge of preservation framing.

MCPF exam consists of two parts. The candidate submits four framed articles including a canvas, a print, a textile, and an object. These are to be framed to very high preservation standards. They are taken apart and scored by MCPF examiners. The candidate is also given 90 minutes to frame a fifth item at the test site, thus demonstrating a thorough knowledge of preservation framing.  Details

Framing Competition PRINT 2017-18

PPFA International Framing Competition PRINT 2017-18

“Sun Dappled II”            Published by Wild Apple Graphics

The 2017-18 PPFA Competition PRINT is a Print on Metal titled “Sun Dappled II” created by Wild Apple Studio, provided by Wild Apple Graphics and printed by Northwest Framing, Northwest Art + Frame COMMERCIAL, Portland OR. The Image Size is 6″ x 6″ with a high gloss finish on a Chromalux panel.

With the introduction of metal as print media, framers are being asked to frame a dye sublimation photo image on metal. This print will present a unique challenge for framing as there is not a hanging system attached to the metal. The framer will need to find a way to properly display this metal print in a manner that will not harm the piece and will support the artwork. A second challenge will be the monochromatic color scheme. Framers will need to decide how to best enhance the art without taking away from the artwork.

Information from Northwest Framing about the printing process: The image is printed using a special Epson printer with ink dyes onto a transfer paper that can then be applied to the Chromalux panel which has been treated to receive the dyes from the printed paper. The print and panel are registered together and then put flat into a heat press that applies 400 degrees of heat under pressure (about 80 psi) for approximately 2 minutes.

The PPFA International Framing Competition is going DIGITAL!

This year marks an exciting new change — the PPFA International Framing Competition is going DIGITAL, making it easier than ever to enter, wherever you are in the world!

Instead of entering at Chapters (or the Mailbox competition for overseas entries) all you need is a camera/cellphone/iPad etc., to snap images of your OPEN and/or PRINT entry, and enter by August l, 2017.

The Top 50 qualifiers in the digital round will send their physical piece(s) to the January 2018 International Framing Competition Finals at the PPFA Convention in Las Vegas, where they will be judged and then displayed in a PPFA ‘Competition Framing Gallery’ on the WCAF trade show floor.

Buy the “Sun Dappled 11” PRINT at the PPFA Online Store at — where you’ll soon find all the information you need to enter.  Select COMPETITION in the pull-down menu. The cost is $40.

Many more details will follow soon: watch for details in the PPFA CONNECT newsletter, Picture Framing Magazine, the PPFA Framers Corner, Facebook,, and many other venues.

We look forward to an amazing PPFA International Framing Competition!
